The Alliance for Biking & Walking has released the 2016 edition of its bi-annual national bicycling and walking Benchmarking Project. The Alliance has been tracking data across the U.S. since 2003, and every two years the agency releases an updated report, providing a comprehensive snapshot of biking and walking in the nation.

The project's objectives include promoting data collection and availability, measuring progress and evaluate results, and supporting efforts to increase bicycling and walking.

The report also aims to help make the connection between active transportation and healthy communities, and to strengthen the network of advocacy organizations who rely on the Benchmarking Report as a resource.

The Alliance re-structured the 2016 report based on feedback from advocates, officials, researchers, and others. The first half contains a review of relevant research, with the intent of helping the reader identify and make their case for biking and walking improvements, while the second half digs into the numbers, at both the state level and city level. At the end, a "tool box" of resources is included to help readers apply the data to particular situations.
