CMAP Weekly Update, 3-7-14
CMAP meetings. The CMAP Board will meet at 9:30 a.m. next Wednesday, March 12, 2014. The Regional Coordinating Committee will meet prior to the Board at 8:00 a.m. The MPO Policy Committee meets on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
FLIP applications. Applications are available for the 2014-15 Future Leaders in Planning (FLIP) program. Participating high school students from throughout the region meet one Saturday per month to learn about issues that shape our region's economy and quality of life. Priority deadline applications must be postmarked or emailed by Friday, May 30, 2014, and the final deadline is September 22. Contact Ricardo Lopez (firstname.lastname@example.org or 312-386-8766).
MPC roundtable on GO TO 2040 update. The Metropolitan Planning Council will host a roundtable on the GO TO 2040 plan update on May 29 from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at their offices (140 S. Dearborn, Suite 1400, Chicago). The panel will include leaders such as Leanne Redden of the Regional Transportation Authority discussing the role of partners in plan implementation. Register on-line.
Other News and Announcements
Travel tracker visualization. Chicago Magazine featured an animated video of daily movement through the region using data from CMAP's travel tracker survey.
Freight testimony. As we mentioned last week, CMAP Board chairman Gerald Bennett testified at a special U.S. House of Representatives hearing on the importance of freight. Extended video of the entire session is now available. This week it was described in materials from the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations and National Association of Regional Councils.
Smart Growth award. Streetsblog Chicago highlighted the value of implementing GO TO 2040 and the plan's recent Smart Growth Achievement award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The plan is featured in a U.S. EPA video and booklet (see page 10).
Soles and Spokes. We featured a new Institute for Transportation and Development Policy guide on planning and implementing bike-sharing programs in cities of differing sizes and in different development contexts.
Transit task force. The finance working group of the Northeastern Illinois Transit Task Force released its draft report.
Metra station design meetings. A series of public meetings will be held beginning March 11 to develop typologies that guide land-use design and access improvements around 77 Metra stations in Chicago. Learn more at www.chicagometratypologies.com.
Housing Expo. U.S. Congresswoman Robin Kelly will host a Housing Expo on March 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Victory Apostolic Church (20801 Matteson Avenue, Matteson). Register for the free event on-line.
Highway construction meeting. The Transportation Management Association (TMA) of Lake Cook will host its annual meeting on highway construction projects featuring presentations from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Lake and Cook Counties, and the Illinois Tollway on March 21 at 9:00 a.m. at Baxter Healthcare (1 Baxter Parkway, Deerfield).
Rail Summit. The 2014 Rail Summit will be held June 6 at the Union League Club of Chicago from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Keynote speakers include Indiana Secretary of Commerce Victor Smith, OmniTRAX chairman Brad Skinner, and more. Contact email@example.com or 312-750-9150 for more information.
Transit event. To better coordinate Niles Free Bus routes with the Pace Arterial Rapid Transit (ART) route planned for Milwaukee Avenue in 2016, Pace and the Village will seek public input for their Free Bus Modernization Project at a public meeting on Wednesday, March 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The event is at the Oasis Water Park and Fun Center, 7877 Milwaukee Ave. in Niles. Residents can also complete a web survey.

A Calumet City resident shared his thoughts on a recent public meeting for the development of his community's new comprehensive plan with the Times of Northwest Indiana.
The South East Chicago Commission will host the next two free workshops in its Green Healthy Neighborhoods in Action: Southside Sustainability Series on March 18 and 19. Residents of the Woodlawn and Washington Park communities are invited, and topics will cover water and energy conservation (Tuesday) and green infrastructure and rain gardens (Wednesday). The workshops helps implement the Green Healthy Neighborhoods Land Use Plan completed by the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development and community partners. Residents of Addison, Bensenville, Villa Park, and Wood Dale can provide feedback on the types and location of housing they'd like to see in their communities at http://www.nedupage.metroquest.com through March 27. Feedback will be incorporated into the Homes for a Changing Region plan under development for this cluster of communities in partnership with MPC and Metropolitan Mayors Caucus.
