Alternative Futures: Transformed Economy

The Chicago Tribune previewed our next forum, "The Future of Economic Opportunity," while reporting on a timely new study of automation's long-term effects on regional jobs.  Also see CMAP's guest post on the Metropolitan Planning Council blog about the forum, which will be held on Wednesday, July 19, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., at the Homewood-Flossmoor Auditorium (2010 N. Chestnut Rd., Homewood).

Finally, August 30 will mark a return to the City Club of Chicago by CMAP executive director Joe Szabo.  His talk will be the first look at what we've heard from the public during our five-month Alternative Futures engagement and preview recommendations of the ON TO 2050 plan.

CMAP Happenings

Updated community snapshots
Based on new information from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2011-15 American Community Survey, CMAP has updated the Community Data Snapshots for all 284 municipalities, seven counties, 77 City of Chicago Community Areas, and the region as a whole.  Metrics include housing, educational attainment, household income, and other population characteristics.

Chicago minority groups grow
Chicago Tonight reported on CMAP's recent Policy Update, which found significant decline in the number of white and African-American residents in the Chicago region between 2005-16. Growing groups including Asian and Hispanic populations now comprise nearly a third of the region's population, while persons of color overall comprise nearly half.

ON TO 2050 outreach
We thank the Advisory Committee for the Regional Transportation Authority's Human Services Transportation Plan, CMAP's Human and Community Development Committee, and the Woods Fund Chicago for hosting ON TO 2050 Alternative Futures events this week.  To arrange a discussion, contact Jane Grover (312-386-8802 or jgrover@cmap.illinois.gov).

Draft ON TO 2050 Preview Report

Please submit comments by Thursday, August 3, on the draft ON TO 2050 Preview Report, which describes likely recommendations organized by the three overarching principles of resilience, inclusive growth, and prioritized investment.

CMAP will incorporate feedback and release the final preview report in October 2017.  A draft of the full ON TO 2050 plan will be released for comment in June 2018, with adoption scheduled for October 2018.
