The Illinois Center for Transportation's newest report describes how public agencies such as the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) can best meet accessibility requirements on their right-of-way (ROW) as mandated by state and federal law so as to avoid costly penalties from non-compliance. The project's objectives were to:

  • Conduct a comprehensive literature review to analyze the most current resource materials on public ROW accessibility requirements.
  • Recommend content for ROW accessibility requirements on IDOT's website.
  • Develop a comprehensive field guide for IDOT for field engineers and construction inspectors to verify compliance with applicable state accessibility laws and regulations.
  • Create e-learning modules on accessibility requirements for IDOT classroom training
  • Develop recommendations to guide IDOT on improving compliance with ROW accessibility requirements.

The resulting document is a guide on how IDOT and similar agencies can best provide accessibility requirement information for local public agencies, consultants, contractors, and personnel, while also ensuring that projects are built to meet the latest accessibility requirements.
