A new book, Rethinking Streets: An Evidence-Based Guide to 25 Complete Street Transformations, uses examples, evidence, and information from real-life street projects that were implemented around the U.S. in order to help communities imagine alternative futures for their own streets.  Moving beyond hypothetical redesigns, the book shows actual, constructed examples from typical communities to show, in detail, how a specific street was altered and what resulted from the change.

The premise of the book is that streets must do more than simply move automobiles quickly; they should provide safe mobility for all needed modes of travel; and that streets are public places, where people not only travel, but also meet, sit and socialize, conduct business, wander about, play, and more.

The book is available for free upon request from the book's principal author at the University of Oregon's Sustainable Cities Initiative.
