On Wednesday, October 7, students, parents, teachers, community leaders, and local and state officials across the country will walk and bicycle to school in celebration of Walk to School Day.  Walk to School Day began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. Growing interest and participation has led to the creation and promotion of Walk to School events throughout the entire month of October. In Illinois, 123 communities are registered to participate, including 46 from the CMAP region.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx, has recorded a video message encouraging students and parents to get involved in Walk to School Day.
