Because protected bike lanes (PBLs) are typically too narrow for standard street plows and sweepers, they present cities special challenges for plowing and sweeping. To help cities tackle this problem, People for Bikes has published four posts that survey the equipment and methods used in maintaining PBLs.  People for Bikes staff researched what equipment is currently used across North American and European cities to clear snow and remove debris such as leaves from PBLs and found that, because of variation in lane design and different types of snow (quantity, weight, thaw pattern, etc.), there is not one set of equipment or procedures that works best in all locations. However, the posts review in detail the range of equipment used and share lessons learned from their conversations with numerous municipal staff responsible for street cleaning.
