Transit Modernization

A new CMAP strategy paper, Transit Modernization and Innovation, explores how innovation, investment, and modernization can make our regional transit system successful for decades to come. Recommendations include increasing funds for mass transit, ensuring equitable access, creating smart public and private partnerships, integrating land use planning, and improving coordination across transit agencies. Also see ON TO 2050 strategy papers about Highway Operations and Emerging Transportation Technology.

Planning in the news

Census data by state

Wednesday the U.S. Census Bureau released national and state population estimates. As CMAP policy principal Liz Schuh told the Sun-Times, while near-term fluctuations can be misleading, Census data over several years indicates stagnant or even declining population for our region and state. Among some positive signs -- for example, increased overall diversity, despite losses in some races, ethnicities, and geographic areas -- the ability to retain current residents poses near- and long-term economic and social challenges for metropolitan Chicago and Illinois. Congestion pricing

A Chicago Tribune editorial reiterated support for our region to deploy express toll lanes -- in use by many U.S. regions -- as an important tool for managing traffic flow and maximizing the benefit of infrastructure investments. But the Trib cites a new implementation of congestion pricing in Virginia to sound a cautionary note echoing CMAP's position, which is that each project must be carefully structured to protect the public interest.

Equitable TOD Symposium

Elevated Chicago, a project of the Strong, Prosperous, and Resilient Communities Challenge dedicated to promoting local equitable transit-oriented development (TOD), held a symposium to discuss and share ideas for turning areas around regional transit stations into "hubs of opportunity." Streetsblog Chicago described part of the day's activities. A recent ON TO 2050 snapshot report explored trends in regional Infill and TOD.
