CMAP Weekly Update, 2-16-18

CMAP Board recap
The CMAP Board met on Wednesday, with an agenda that included an overview of the ON TO 2050 Land Use chapter that staff is still drafting prior to the public comment period in June. Also discussed were the agency's Federal Agenda and State Legislative Agenda, both of which the Board approved without dissent.

And the Board bid farewell to members Elliott Hartstein (an original appointee from 2005) and Peter Silvestri. CMAP thanks them both for their service to the region, and we welcome their successors, respectively: Terry Weppler, mayor of the Village of Libertyville (representing Lake County), and Diane Williams, trustee of the Village of Flossmoor (representing Suburban Cook).

Natural Resources

CMAP has published the Natural Resources snapshot, our final report in the ON TO 2050 snapshot series. It explores the state of the region’s air, land, and water resources. Covering current conditions and trends such as climate change and development, the report provides context to inform the environmental recommendations of ON TO 2050.

Planning in the news

Infrastructure in the news
Last night CMAP posted a Policy Update on what the White House's infrastructure plan and budget proposal could mean for our region. See related coverage in the Chicago Tribune, Streetsblog Chicago, the New York Times, and CityLab.

CMAP happenings

Placemaking memo
A new CMAP memo on Placemaking describes case studies and recommendations to help residents create welcoming and vibrant spaces in their communities. The report looks at key elements of successful placemaking initiatives to identify a series of best practices.

Traffic signal inventory
CMAP has released the Highway Traffic Signal Inventory for Northeastern Illinois. The inventory, a geodatabase, includes the location and technical features present at signalized intersections in the region.

Chicago Community Trust grant
For the third year, The Chicago Community Trust has awarded a General Operating, or “GO,” grant to CMAP for work that advances GO TO 2040 recommendations and furthers the development of ON TO 2050. The majority of the grant will support the CMAP Local Technical Assistance program.

Public comment: GO TO 2040/FFY 2014-19 TIP Conformity Analysis and TIP Amendment
The CMAP Transportation Committee recently released a conformity analysis of GO TO 2040 and the FFY 2014-19 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Please review the cover memo and list of conformity amendments. Comments may be submitted by mail, email, or phone (312-454-0400) through Monday, February 19.

Chicago Fed Strategic Plan survey
The Community Development and Policy Studies division of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is conducting a survey to learn how to better communicate with its audience. The survey, part of the Fed's five-year strategic plan, takes about five minutes to complete.

Recognition for Chicago-area solar
The national SolSmart program recognized 15 Chicago-area municipalities and counties for making it faster, easier, and more affordable for residents and businesses to go solar. Thanks to leadership by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, Illinois has more SolSmart-designated communities than any other state.
