In addition to developing water-related plans and policies, CMAP works with local governments, stakeholders, and partners to conserve and restore the region's water resources.  CMAP serves as the Illinois Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP) coordinator for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, McHenry, and Will counties.  The VLMP brings together citizens, state agency staff, and municipal staff to monitor and investigate the quality of the state's lakes.  Data from the program is used by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, scientists, planners, and consultants to inform local lake and watershed management decision making.

The VLMP is currently seeking volunteers to monitor lakes in the Chicago region. Volunteers need only have a boat and anchor to participate. All monitoring equipment, data forms, instructional materials (including a comprehensive Training Manual), and other supplies are provided by the program.  To get involved, contact Holly Hudson, Northeastern Illinois VLMP Coordinator (312-386-8700 or hhudson@cmap.illinois.gov).
