CMAP Weekly Update, 12-18-20

Building northeastern Illinois back stronger in 2020

The year 2020 has tested our region's resiliency in unimaginable ways. Despite these challenges, CMAP staff made progress toward achieving the vision of ON TO 2050, while addressing significant impacts the pandemic has had on northeastern Illinois. CMAP's work during a trying year could not have been accomplished without the invaluable contributions and partnership from local officials and community partners.

Our strong relationships allowed us to foster collaboration and drive innovation throughout the year. We developed important analyses showing COVID-19's effect on essential workers and the disproportionate impact it has had on people of color. We tracked how commuting and trip-making patterns have changed and started work on a mobility recovery plan. Together with Choose Chicago, we assembled a task force to lead regional economic recovery after being tasked with the challenge by the seven county Board Chairs and the City of Chicago.

While largely focused on providing critical information to municipalities during this unprecedented time, we also continued supplying the data and analysis you typically rely on from CMAP, like a sidewalk inventory of northeastern Illinois and regional water demand forecast for every municipality in the region, to name just a few.

So many parts of our lives went digital this year, and the CMAP Annual Report is no different. I hope you will take a few minutes to watch our 2020 Annual Report video to learn more about what we have achieved together.

The pandemic has challenged us in extraordinary ways. But it has also brought us together in ways that wouldn’t have been possible if it weren't for this shared experience and need. As Peter Marshall, chaplain of the U.S. Senate in 1947, described, "When we long for life without difficulty, remind us that oaks grow strong under contrary winds, and diamonds are made under pressure."

Thank you for your partnership over the past year. We look forward to continuing this important work with you in the months and years ahead.
