In May 2014, the League of American Bicyclists released a report as part of its Every Bicyclist Counts initiative to document fatal traffic crashes involving bicyclists over a 12-month period.  The overarching goal of the initiative is to highlight the need for better data, reporting, and intensified efforts at all levels of government to improve safety for cyclists.  The project also serves as a memorial, providing a place to remember the victims and raise the hope that their deaths would inform efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future.   The project documents 628 fatal bike crashes, which represents a high percentage of the official number of such fatalities recorded by federal authorities.
