The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration has published new safety performance measures as part of its national safety program that calls for state and regional targets to help reduce highway deaths and injuries. The regulations also call for improved data on roadway features and a consistent definition of serious injuries. For the first time, the safety program also includes measures for people walking and bicycling. State and regional targets, along with their progress toward achieving these targets, will be available through a public reporting system. State departments of transportation and metropolitan planning organizations will be required to use the information in their investment programming and will be accountable to achieving annual their targets. For more information, see the U.S. DOT press release.
