The March/April issue of the Federal Highway Administration's bimonthly magazine, Public Roads, includes the article, "Towards More Flexible Design." The article focuses on the ways in which FHWA's changes to roadway design "controlling criteria" -- which includes elements such as 'design speed,' 'lane width,' and 'shoulder width,' and others -- is giving road engineers greater design flexibility to create best-fit, or 'right-size' solutions for communities nationwide.  This flexibility helps planners and engineers better accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians.
