New CMAP analysis of Illinois capital funding

Before its session adjourned, the Illinois General Assembly approved a package of legislation increasing revenues to pay for transportation capital projects, natural resources and open space, water infrastructure, schools and other facilities, and affordable housing. A new CMAP Policy Update provides an overview of the capital funding legislation and assesses how it will meet regional needs.

The legislation made important progress on implementing the ON TO 2050 recommendation that the State of Illinois provide sustainable funding for transportation infrastructure , including increasing the motor fuel tax and indexing the rate to an inflationary measure. These and other new revenues are critical steps toward adequately funding the state’s roads, bridges, and transit system. Due to years of underinvestment, the state’s needs for repair, replacement, and modernization remain significant, in particular for our region’s transit system . CMAP looks forward to continuing to collaborate with our many partners to prioritize and implement key projects that will make our transportation system safer and more reliable.
