Freight Volumes for the Trucking System
The folllowing tables summarize estimated 2007 and forecast 2040 freight volumes for the regional trucking system. The source for much of this information is the Transearch database, which estimates national commodity flows based on sample data, rather than comprehensive physical counts. Where possible, we have validated Transearch 2007 estimates with alternative sources of data, including ground data, alternative counts, and previous estimates.
Trucking Volumes: 2007 estimates and 2040 forecasts
Background: The trucking industry includes many submarkets. These submarkets include for-hire freight services, which can haul goods on a truckload or less than truckload basis. In addition, many companies across the economy own and operate their own freight services, which often include "private trucks." Trucks can be either "straight trucks" often used for local freight distribution, or, alternatively, a tractor ("bobtail") and trailer. Truck rigs may also include tractor and container on a chassis, used for intermodal shipping with the rail system. Global Insight's Transearch database, used to prepare these estimates, varies in its ability to capture various trucking system market sectors. For example, Transearch does not capture the local distribution of goods to the retail market. Likewise, household moving, package delivery, and contruction-site deliveries are not included. Thus, the estimates below, at this time only showing Transearch estimates, will be refined for these missing trips in the near future as validation proceeds. Some of these refinements will be substantial. Since the Transearch results are understood to include only about half of freight trips, we will be concentrating on determining the characteristics of the missing trips, so the figures below are updated with estimates related to ground truth. At the present time, the working assumption is that the missing trips follow the characteristics of the trips in the Transearch database, yielding 736,158,000 truck trips in addition to the trips shown below, for a total of 1,472,317,000 truck trips in the CMAP study area in 2007.
